The Dodge Challenger R/T and Ford Mustang GT are the sweet spot under $40K. Both deliver V8 power, a massive aftermarket, and are widely available in NC. A 2018-2020 Challenger R/T or Mustang GT with the 5.0 Coyote typically lands in the $30K-$38K range with reasonable mileage.
The 5.7L Hemi in the R/T and the 6.4L in the Scat Pack are both proven, durable engines. The biggest daily-driver considerations are fuel economy (15-19 MPG city) and the car's size in tight parking situations. Mechanically, they hold up well with regular maintenance.
If the driving experience matters to you, the V8 is worth the premium. The sound, the torque, and the resale value are all significantly better. V6 muscle cars depreciate faster and don't scratch the same itch. The one exception is the turbocharged EcoBoost Mustang, which is genuinely quick and more fuel-efficient.
The Ford Mustang GT leads the pack with the largest aftermarket parts catalog of any modern performance car. The Dodge Challenger and Camaro SS are close behind. For import fans, the Nissan 370Z and Toyota GR Supra have deep tuner communities with bolt-on kits that make serious power.
The Camaro SS generally offers sharper handling and a more driver-focused chassis out of the box. The Mustang GT has better visibility, a larger trunk, and a much bigger aftermarket. Both are excellent - the Mustang is better as a daily, the Camaro is better on a back road.
