Our company has been in the independent used car business in North Carolina for over twenty years. In that time we've watched the landscape for dealers change dramatically - and not in their favor.
The large national websites that became the go-to names for car shoppers kept raising their prices year after year. What started as a reasonable way to get visibility turned into an expense that priced most independent dealers right out of the conversation. When you can't afford to compete dollar for dollar with the bigger stores, your inventory gets buried under sponsored listings from dealers with larger budgets.
A used car dealer can't list every vehicle they have across multiple platforms when each one charges hundreds - if not thousands - per month. So they pick one, and hope for the best. Meanwhile, the car buyer on those platforms never sees their inventory at all.
